Vin Santo for the Holiday

By Sandra Cemulini - 05-12-2007 7:30

Vin Santo, an elegant Tuscan dessert wine is an impressive touch to uncork and serve at your dinner parites this Holiday season.   The name means "holy wine", and it is thought that a priest in the 1300's would give the wine used during Mass to the sick, some who had healed attributed it to the wine, therefore Vin Santo.  Most typically served with the Cantuccini, Tuscan crisp almond cookies, but it goes well with any cookie or cake(try it with Panettone), as long as the dessert is not too sweet or rich.  Excellent sipped on its own after dinner. Golden amber color,  warm and velvety, it is made with the Trebbiano and Malvasia and/or Sangiovese varietals.  The best selected grapes are then dried on racks.  Aged a minimum of 3 years in small oak or chestnut barrels called carattelli. Some of my favorites are Tenuta di Capezzana, San Niccolo` Castellare di Castellina, and Avignonesi.  Priced at around $40.00 375ml. Salute!

Margaux

By Ken - 26-11-2007 2:38

Margaux        Nestled in the southernmost area of Bordeaux’s famed Haut Medoc region is the village and appellation of Margaux. Margaux wines have long been known for their elegance… and their ability to age gracefully.   Not a bad reputation to have! You see they are typically a blend of about 60% Cabernet with 40% Merlot… which softens them and gives them relatively early drink ability. The most interesting grapes come from vineyards on little knolls, or croupes, which afford good exposure to the sun and excellent drainage.   And along with the gravelly soils that stress the vines, the grapes seem to concentrate their characteristic flavors more.   So Margaux wines are full tilt tasty and very aromatic and at the same time they are less edgy than other Bordeaux offerings.   Margaux actually has more of the classified growth Bordeaux chateaux than any other appellation too.   On your way to discover the elegance and finesse of a good Margaux!   Pop the Cork™. Chardonnay Rediscovered

By Ken - 25-11-2007 6:46

Chardonnay Rediscovered  Waaay back in January ('07) we began our rediscovery of California Chardonnay.   Well, here we are at the end of the year and those twelve choices make up a great mixed case of the styles and incredible quality of Californian Chard.   From very structured, complex and elegant to brightly tropical and crispy, we’ve sipped a full range of how this magnificent grape can bring so many different characteristics to our taste buds.   Best of all, California winemakers are getting more subtle with the oaky woodiness that was so common, letting the beauty of the fruit come through.   Here’s is the essence of what Chardonnay can be – like biting in to a perfect ripe pear, enjoying the crunch of a granny smith apple, drizzling the juice of a plump pineapple, and putting a sprits of lemon on the fruit salad.   All with the full-bodied richness that’s so good with food.   So get back to Chardonnay!   And check out our twelve California Chardonnay’s of the month for 2007.   Pop the Cork™.
